The Center for infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP) of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is established in the year 2009 during the centenary celebrations of Indian Institute of Science, with inputs from many visionaries, organizations and has plans and road map to be one of the finest centers of advanced research and training in the field of transportation engineering in India and abroad.

In keeping with the Solid Waste Management Rules of 2008 and the guidelines stipulated thereof by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) for institutions, the Indian Institute of Science has put in place a sustainable and smart Solid Waste Management system. An initiative called SWaMII (Solid Waste Management Iinitiative for IISc) had been started by the Centre for infrastructure Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP) for the comprehensive management of solid waste generated within campus. In developing this model, several national and international case studies and best practices were reviewed. Further, surveys and interviews were conducted with the faculty, staff and students at the Indian Institute of Science.
